WELCOME TO A CLASS ABOUT TRANSLANGUAGING
Dr. Hanh Dinh
Translanguaging is a practice used by multilingual individuals to move between the languages they know to communicate in various social contexts. Their language repertoire is understood as one system rather than a collection of discrete languages. In an educational setting, translanguaging can be controlled by both the student and the teacher. It is supposed to maximize the student's multilingual ability. But how? The course aims to explain the gap between the very positive theory and the not-so-positive practical applications that are full of struggle, uncertainties, undecided questions, problematic issues, and lack of methodology. The class will attempt to find not only explanations for these issues but also give a chance for students to develop some concrete applications of the approach.
"Translanguaging is the act performed by bilinguals of accessing different linguistic features or various modes of what are described as autonomous languages, in order to maximize communicative potential."
Ofelia García (2009: 140)
