Types of bilingual education- Language distance and multicompetence- Bilingualism and Common Core
From the coursebook, we know that different forms of bilingual education. Watch the following short video clips of some types we have discussed in the lecture and answer the questions:

What is the societal and educational aim of the program described in each clip above? What are the expected learning outcomes of the international/immigrant student(s) in clip 1, clip 2, and clip 3?
Name one form of (bilingual) education you are teaching, or would like to experience in the future. How can you help a bilingual kid to be successful in that type of bilingual program and overcome any foreseeable challenges it may have? Explain the answers with specific examples and supporting details.

Answer the following questions:
2.1. After you listen to the clip, is Korean a topic-prominent or a subject prominent language? In your opinion, what is the difference between Korean and English considering (A) a writing system as a representation of spoken language; (B) a grammatical system as a framework for communication; (C) a semantic system as the cultural outlook? You can find the example of the rating scale described on page 90 and 91 in Kecskes & Tunde Papp book. (e.g., German versus English is A1/B2/C2).
2.2 If a student comes from Korea, what kinds of challenges do you think he or she may encounter when participating in English mainstream education?
3.1 Explore the resources of Common Core and Bilingualism. Which theory among THREE theories mentioned in the lecture video above do you think that New York State pursues for their Bilingual Programs?
3.2 View the sample lesson plan implemented in the Home Language Arts Progressions and New Language Arts Progressions with 5 levels of language development. Design and describe ONE activity for students in a specific group you choose (e.g. Emerging/Low intermediate or Commanding/Proficient) to achieve the Common Core Anchor Standard Grade 6: "Writing Grade 6: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation." Feel free to specify the content you intend to teach, how you teach it, and/or any coursebook or supplementary materials you want to include in your activity.
