Term Paper
The term paper can have two forms:
1) You can write a paper on one of the following topics:
1.1 Cognitive, cultural and communicative aspects of lying in interaction
1.2 Small talk in communication
1.3 Humor and its relation to pragmatics
1.4 Pragmatics and language teaching
1.5 The role of culture in pragmatics
1.6 Pragmatic competence of second language learners
1.7 Speech acts in pragmatics
1.8 Socialization and pragmatics
1.9 Implicatures in second language use
1.10 Is English as a Lingua Franca a language?
These are general topics that may be narrowed down according to the interest of the student. The paper can also focus on the summary of relevant literature from the UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE of the student.
2) You can select a topic and do independent research on one of the issues (or some issues) that interest you most in pragmatics. If you select this option, you must consult the instruction about the topic first.
Whichever option you choose you can structure your paper as follows:
- introduction
- main body of the paper with sub-headings
- concluding remarks
In both cases what I would like to see is your independent individual thinking, and your independent individual approach to the issues that you discuss. It’s OK that you rely on other people’s works, but you must pull those works and ideas together into a paper in your own way.
In both cases the requirements are as follows:
- No more than minimum 12 or maximum 15 double-spaced pages plus references. The references are NOT included in the 12-15 page limits. They are extra.
- In quoting and referencing please use the style that you see in the papers you have read for the class (either APA or MLA style).
- Deadline for submission: 4:30 PM, May 14.
Only electronic submission is accepted. Please email your submission to
istvan.kecskes@gmail.com and dtmyhanh92@gmail.com BEFORE the deadline. No papers will be accepted after the deadline.
